A craft-focused retreat for serious writers at any stage of their career.
“Squam Writes gave me the space to completely disconnect from all of my responsibilities and focus exclusively on my writing. I was ten times more productive than I ever am at home.” – Lucy Keating, author of Ride With Me

Squam Writes is a four-day writing retreat for writers in all genres looking for time and space to practice their craft and connect with other serious writers doing the same.
For over a decade, our small group retreat has offered writers a chance to focus on craft and wellbeing in a stunning natural setting.
We build ample writing time into our schedule so you can find your creative flow, and we provide plenty of social opportunities so you can connect with other writers. All programming is optional. More than anything, we want you to leave feeling creatively nourished inspired.
If you’re looking for feedback, we offer optional critiques from published authors, peer feedback on your work in progress, and nightly discussions on common roadblocks and career hurdles many writers face. You can start your morning with an optional hike to Rattlesnake Mountain. You can also choose to sleep in, if that’s more your speed. Or, maybe you want to rent a kayak? Go for a swim? Sit on the dock and dip your toes in? The loons are calling and the crystal clear lake water is just warming up in June. Mid-morning, try a creative meditation designed to help you focus and dive back into your writing. Shared meals and nightly discussions are great places to find support and unwind.
Past attendees include New York Times bestselling authors Lana Harper and Alison Espach, and Newberry honoree Rajani LaRocca.
We offer the Golden Pond Residency to up to three mid-career published writers. This residency reduces the cost of the entire retreat to $595, with single accommodations available for an additional fee.
Space is very limited and fills quickly. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis.
Applications for 2026 open December 1, 2025 (tentative).

Relax

Connect
Renew old friendships and forge new ones. The intimate setting and limited enrollment make this retreat the perfect place to get to know your fellow writers and make the lasting personal connections that will serve you at every step of your career.

Advance
Learn from your peers (many of whom are traditionally published), participate in optional manuscript exchanges, and hone your skills during technique presentations from the directors. This exclusive retreat is designed to help writers at any stage in their careers. We hope you’ll join us.
